When It Comes to Grad School, Is the Entrance Exam Really the “Easy” Part?

Read time: 3 minutes

If you’re studying for the LSAT, GMAT, or GRE – you’ve probably been told that the entrance exam is the easy part. But is it true?

Entrance exams are NOT easy

The very purpose of an exam is to test the ability of the taker, so yes, entrance exams are challenging. Whether applying to law school, business school, or any other graduate program, your score on the entrance exam is a critical component within your admissions package and will impact what schools accept you. Getting into a reputable program is no easy task and the entrance exam must reflect this!

For example, experts recommend studying 100-200 hours for the GMAT in order to achieve an impressive score. If you’re studying for the LSAT, it’s recommended that students spend 150-300 hours preparing! For the GRE, the recommended time spent studying is about 50-100 hours.

So should you still take the test?

Yes! While each test requires a substantial time commitment, it shouldn’t daunt you from taking the exam and applying. Students can rest assured with some hard work, preparation, and time-management, they can do very well on the LSAT, GRE, or GMAT.

It also helps to look at the exam preparation as practice for the workload you’ll be taking on as a graduate student. You’ll need to carve out a significant amount of time to study once you’ve been accepted, which will most likely lead to more than a few late nights.

Remember, taking the test can also be exceptionally rewarding! When you score well, you can then proudly include your test score in your admissions package and increase your chances of being accepted into the graduate school of your dreams.

But how hard is graduate school?

Although graduate school will be undeniably difficult, prospective students shouldn’t be intimidated by the commitment it entails. Attending law school, business school, or any type of graduate program is going to be hard, but it’s also rewarding and can help your career a great deal over time.

With a graduate degree, you’ll have a greater network and connections, increased knowledge in your chosen field, as well as a higher earning potential.

Taking a graduate admissions test or going to grad school is no walk in the park. However, with hard work and determination, it’s nothing you can’t accomplish!
